Rodent problems can start quietly, and that is what makes them stressful for homeowners.
A homeowner in Indian Land reached out after noticing small signs around the garage and hearing light scratching sounds at night. At first, it did not seem like a major issue, but once those sounds kept happening, they knew it was time to have the property checked.
When I arrived, I started by asking where the activity had been noticed most. They mentioned the garage, a storage area and one side of the home where there were a few small gaps near the exterior.
That gave me a starting point.
With rodent issues, I always tell homeowners that the goal is not just to find where rodents are now. The goal is to understand how they may be getting in, what is attracting them and what conditions may allow the problem to continue.

The biggest concern with rodents is how quickly the issue can spread if the entry points are not addressed.
Once rodents find shelter, they may move into attics, crawlspaces, garages, wall voids or storage areas. They can contaminate surfaces, damage insulation, chew materials and create odors. For many homeowners, the most frustrating part is not knowing where they are coming from.
In this case, the homeowner had been cleaning up small signs of activity, but the source had not been identified yet. That is why the activity kept returning.
A surface-level cleanup is not enough when rodents still have access to the property. Homeowners need to know where rodents may be entering and what needs to be corrected to help reduce future activity.

Step 1 — Inspect the Activity Areas
I started by reviewing the places where the homeowner had noticed signs of activity. This included the garage, storage areas, exterior edges and the side of the home where gaps were visible.
Step 2 — Look for Entry Points
Next, I checked for small gaps, utility openings, damaged seals, crawlspace access points and other areas where rodents may be getting inside. Rodents do not need a large opening to create a problem.
Step 3 — Review Conditions Around the Property
I looked for food, clutter, moisture, storage concerns and any conditions that could make the property more attractive to rodents.
Step 4 — Recommend a Clear Plan
After the inspection, I explained what I found and recommended the right service and prevention steps to help reduce future activity.
Once the activity areas were identified, the homeowner felt more confident about what needed to happen next.
The goal was not just to remove the current activity. The goal was to help the homeowner understand the problem, reduce access points and make the property less inviting for rodents moving forward.
That is always the best approach with rodent control. You want to address the current concern, but you also want to reduce the chance of the same issue happening again.

Here are a few rodent prevention tips I often recommend to homeowners:
Seal small gaps around the foundation and exterior walls.
Keep garage doors and exterior doors properly sealed.
Store food, pet food and bird seed in sealed containers.
Reduce clutter in garages, attics and storage spaces.
Trim vegetation away from the home.
Check crawlspace and attic access points.
Watch for new droppings, odors or scratching sounds.

A few rodent signs should not be ignored.
Droppings usually mean rodents are actively moving through the area.
Scratching sounds may point to activity inside walls, ceilings or attic spaces.
Gnaw marks can show that rodents are chewing through materials to create access.
Open gaps around the home can allow the problem to continue.
Rodent problems are much easier to manage when the source is found early.

If you notice rodent signs around your home, do not wait for the problem to grow.
A few droppings, scratching sounds or small openings can be early signs of a larger issue. The sooner the property is inspected, the easier it is to understand what is happening and what needs to be done next.
